CHARISSE'S UPDATE

CACSMALL Hello Brand Nu Words Friends and Family.  Welcome to 2009.  On Thursday we ushered in a new year.  And no sooner did we say hello to 2009 than were we similarly greeted by the barrage of ads from Nutri-System, Slim Fast, and Alli, along with the dietary TV talking heads giving us the best advice on how to get fit and feel fine in 2009 .

Now, it's been a while since I've written to you all.  In August, I was distracted by my vacation, and in the Fall I hit the ground running (but not exercising) to support the Obama Get-Out-the-Vote campaign never stopping until our November victory.  And even then, I didn't really stop. There were victory celebrations and post-election get-togethers all of which, of course, involved food.  Somewhere along the way, I slowed down for a visit with my doctor, who gave me a "pass" for my sudden slow down in my exercise routine and comprised dietary choices because of the "historically electric" nature of my activities.  Hmmmm.  Okay.  Now, I had an excuse!

But after being enticed by Thanksgiving fare and holiday hustle, bustle and treats, I looked up at New Year and didn't exactly like what I saw.  I should've been clued in when during my holiday family photo shoot, I had to ask the photographer crop out mommy's midsection.

So alas, here I sit, on the precipice of a new year, with a few new pounds, but assuaged by the "historically electric" reality of our first African-American president – a man I actually knew, respected and adored for years.  Ahhhh.  And then it happened.  I looked up at the TV.  And in between the Nutri-System commercial and diet-guru-for-the-day, I saw President-elect Obama on the beach in Hawaii in a swim suit with what appeared to be rock-hard abs and zero fat!!! Somehow, we'd made it through the same election but it seemed to have taken a bigger toll on my waistline.

A friend recently said to me something that I'd already known but it served as a helpful reminder, "Everyone has to have their own dreams."  Barack had his own dream.  Thankfully it overlapped in countless ways with my dreams, the dreams of my parents, the dreams of our nation, our ancestors and the dream of a man whom we all called King. But it began as Barack's. How ever-careful we all must remain to distill the dreams we have for our own lives, selves and families and to hold to them steadfast.  In the words of my favorite poet and fellow Lincoln University alum, Langston Hughes:

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

So as we enjoy the new day that 2009 will bring to America , as we inhale the air of a new era, as we are energized by the historic electricity of what Obama means for our people, the nation and the world, let us not lose ourselves in the moment.  Barack, himself, would never want that.

Democracy in the Obama era means that I must take responsibility for those 10 extra pounds that I've found since August.  It means that each of us must take the responsibility to care for our families, our neighbors and our nation, while holding the government accountable to do its part.  It means that we cannot sit back and wait for Barack to do or to dream, but that we step up the plate to do and dream for ourselves, remaining ever mindful as to when and where our dreams coincide and where we must lead with our own dreams inventing a tomorrow based on our greatest imagination.

I AM BARACK OBAMA

ObamaBookCvr

We are working HARD to update our website. Once we do, expect an email announcement about the new release, which will be available in both print and digital formats. But for now, here is an overview:

I Am Barack Obama is not a book about Barack Obama. Rather, it allows children to see themselves through the inspirational story of President Obama growing up as an ordinary child asking, “Who will change the world?” Ultimately, he realizes that he will. I Am Barack Obama highlights for children their personal power to change the world. In the backmatter, children share stories of the possibilities for their lives, as they aspire to the greatness they have seen in Barack. I Am Barack Obama is also the first children's digibook available interactively along with its companion print edition.
